The helpers need help too.

People in caring roles often excel at caring for everyone except themselves.

When we're constantly focused on others' needs, our own well-being can quietly slip away. We skip lunch, work late, carry emotional weight home, and tell ourselves, "everyone else comes first."

But here's the truth: sustainable care starts with caring for the caregiver. Small, consistent practices can make a real difference. Examples include:

  • Monthly coffee connections where teams gather without agenda. Not another meeting, just genuine connection over caffeine.

  • "Sunshine time" built into schedules. Even 15 minutes outside or away from your workspace can reset your perspective.

  • Team gratitude practices that go beyond surface-level appreciation. Share specific moments when a colleague's support made your day better or easier.

  • Set boundaries and encourage your team to do the same. Boundaries are a powerful tool for maintaining work-life balance and contributing to overall wellness.

These aren't luxury add-ons to your work; they're essential infrastructure for sustainable care. When you're running on empty, everyone suffers. When you're resourced and supported, your capacity to help others multiplies.

Bottom line: This week, consider one small step you can take to care for yourself or support a colleague. Taking care of yourself isn't selfish. It's strategic.
